BSLA Firm News

New Chinatown Park Opens on Boston's Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway
Dedication ceremonies for Chinatown Park, the first of the parks to be completed along Boston’s Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, took place on Wednesday, September 12th.  The dedication marked the culmination of a rigorous, five year planning and design effort.  Boston based landscape architects Carol R. Johnson Associates, Inc. designed the park, under the direction of client/owner the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority and with the ongoing involvement of the Mayor’s Central Artery Task Force and the Chinatown and Leather District Advisory Group.  Some 60 members of the community actively participated in public meetings as the design process evolved. 25th Annual Waterfront International Conference
Boston, Massachusetts

The Waterfront Center's 25th annual international conference on waterfront planning, development and culture will be held in Boston, Massachusetts at the Seaport Hotel.

The conference offers nine panels of three presenters each giving registrants a choice of three sessions on Friday morning, Friday afternoon and again on Saturday morning. In addition keynote presentations will take place at the opening and closing of the conference. A conference highlight is the announcement on Friday afternoon, November 2, of the 2007 "Excellence on the Waterfront" award winners for built projects, comprehensive plans and grassroots citizen's efforts, selected by an interdisciplinary jury. This year's 21st five-person jury is headed by Chris Carlson, Senior Design Fellow, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A special pre-conference workshop and guided tours of the Boston waterfront — including a chance to see first hand many of the award-winning projects found there — will be offered all day on Thursday, September 28 (additional registration required). Saturday afternoon tours of area attractions will also be offered on November 3.

Cut off date for an early conference registration fee and for a special low room rate at the Seaport Hotel is October 8, 2007.

Contact: Kathleen Ewing, The Waterfront Center at 202-337-0356; mail@waterfrontcenter.org, or visit

The Landscape Architecture Symposium

Wednesday, November 14

The Boston Society of Landscape Architects sponsors a day-long symposium on sustainable landscape design. Topics include:

B14 Native plants and xeriscaping — definitions and applications
10:30 am - noon
Sponsored by the BSLA

Water is becoming one of the most precious resources we have today. New England communities are adopting standards requiring that all plant material be "native", and xeriscaping techniques are being used to reduce dependency on irrigation systems and public water supplies. What does "natives" mean, and how do designers apply xeriscaping techniques to their plans? How should we be educating the public about this different approach to the landscape, which is more often than not being considered for the public realm? We discuss these and other topical aspects of this growing trend. This seminar is the first of a four-part series presented by the Boston Society of Landscape Architects.

  • Marion Pressley, FASLA, Pressley Associates, Cambridge, Moderator

B32 Green roofs — practice and reality
1:00 - 2:30 pm
Sponsored by the BSLA

As clients and communities become more aware of the need for sustainable design, green roofs are becoming more and more common. This presentation, based on case studies, is useful for any designer contemplating a green roof. We address the pros and cons of this seemingly simple sustainable design approach, review the current state of the art in green roof design, and discuss the reality of built systems and their real impacts and benefits. This seminar is the second of a four-part series presented by the Boston Society of Landscape Architects.

  • Tom Doolittle ASLA, Gilbane Building Company, Cambridge, Moderator

B60 Low-impact development
4:00 - 5:30 pm
Sponsored by the BSLA

Low-impact development (LID) involves creative site planning techniques that lessen the built environment's impact on natural systems. Simple LID site design approaches include minimizing pavement widths, using natural drainage systems, clustering buildings, and using pervious pavements. Our panel discusses the various design and engineering approaches available to designers today and the benefits to clients and the community. This seminar is the third of a four-part series presented by the Boston Society of Landscape Architects.

  • Bob Corning ASLA, Stantec Consulting, Boston, Moderator
  • John Jennings ASLA, VHB/Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Watertown

B82 Sustainable site design — four case studies
6:00 - 7:30 pm
Sponsored by the BSLA

Communities throughout the United States and the world are now focusing on the need for sustainable design approaches to every project being considered. Sustainable site design is a major element in the tool kit designers can use to fulfill this need. Green roofs, low impact design, transit-oriented development, and smart growth techniques are just some of the sustainable design items explored in this session. We analyze four projects to provide designers with a holistic approach to making site development as green as possible. This seminar is the fourth of a four-part series presented by the Boston Society of Landscape Architects.

  • Bob Corning ASLA, Stantec Consulting, Boston, Moderator
  • John Amodeo ASLA, LEED AP, Carol R. Johnson Associates, Boston
  • Martin Roura ASLA, Stantec Consulting, Boston
