Hello
The BSLA Fall Golf Classic took place under perfect late summer skies at Shaker Hills Golf Club in Harvard, MA on Wednesday, September 19. Over 100 golfers enjoyed good golf, good food and great companionship with BSLA members, vendors, contractors and friends.
Thanks to our many sponsors and supporters. These proceeds will help to fund BSLA programs and outreach that benefit the entire green industry. Please thank and support our sponsors throughout the next year (view our sponsors).
We are already in the initial planning stages for next year's event. Watch for news early in 2008.
Thanks again to everybody who helped and participated,
The Golf Committee

The
Landscape Architecture Symposium
Wednesday,
November 14
The Boston Society of Landscape Architects sponsors a day-long symposium
on sustainable landscape design. Topics include:
B14 Native plants and xeriscaping
definitions and applications
10:30 am - noon
Sponsored by the BSLA
Water is becoming one of the most precious resources we have
today. New England communities are adopting standards requiring
that all plant material be "native", and xeriscaping techniques
are being used to reduce dependency on irrigation systems and public
water supplies. What does "natives" mean, and how do designers
apply xeriscaping techniques to their plans? How should we be educating
the public about this different approach to the landscape, which
is more often than not being considered for the public realm? We
discuss these and other topical aspects of this growing trend. This
seminar is the first of a four-part series presented by the Boston
Society of Landscape Architects.

Green roofs practice and reality
1:00 - 2:30 pm
Sponsored by the BSLA
As clients and communities become more aware of the need for
sustainable design, green roofs are becoming more and more common.
This presentation, based on case studies, is useful for any designer
contemplating a green roof. We address the pros and cons of this
seemingly simple sustainable design approach, review the current
state of the art in green roof design, and discuss the reality of
built systems and their real impacts and benefits. This seminar
is the second of a four-part series presented by the Boston Society
of Landscape Architects.

Doolittle ASLA, Gilbane Building Company, Cambridge, Moderator
B60 Low-impact development
4:00 - 5:30 pm
Sponsored by the BSLA
Low-impact development (LID) involves creative site planning
techniques that lessen the built environment's impact on natural
systems. Simple LID site design approaches include minimizing pavement
widths, using natural drainage systems, clustering buildings, and
using pervious pavements. Our panel discusses the various design
and engineering approaches available to designers today and the
benefits to clients and the community. This seminar is the third
of a four-part series presented by the Boston Society of Landscape
Architects.

Sustainable site design four case studies
6:00 - 7:30 pm
Sponsored by the BSLA
Communities throughout the United States and the world are
now focusing on the need for sustainable design approaches to every
project being considered. Sustainable site design is a major element
in the tool kit designers can use to fulfill this need. Green roofs,
low impact design, transit-oriented development, and smart growth
techniques are just some of the sustainable design items explored
in this session. We analyze four projects to provide designers with
a holistic approach to making site development as green as possible.
This seminar is the fourth of a four-part series presented by the
Boston Society of Landscape Architects.

Modeling
Get SketchUp 3D models from a UMass M.L.A. who has 2 years of experience
developing the landscape architecture SketchUp modeling protocols
for a Connecticut firm. SketchUp models are exceedingly communicative!
You can model an entire site or a single detail and then you can
take pictures of your model from any angle or from within it, using
a variety of display styles, from simple forms with photorealistic
paint to artful hand rendering. The program can generate
animations showing walk-throughs or flyovers which really tell exciting
stories. These animations can be inserted into a PowerPoint presentation,
making them easy to use.
You can have quickly made models for design studies, or more carefully
detailed models for presentations and renderings. Work time for
a model compares to making a few good hand renderings, but instead
you get an infinite number of images from a single model! Models
can be altered as design development proceeds. Work is done remotely
in Western Massachusetts, with occasional visits to your office.
All support graphics, such as AutoCAD and Photoshop are also available
to make your model work hard for you.
Contact SketchUpConsulting@comcast.net.
and start showing your ideas in all three dimensions.
