Boston Architectural College, New Orleans Studio I-First Steps in Rebuilding

August 2005, Katrina hit New Orleans and the Gulf. We witnessed devastating floods and winds, people waiting for helicopters to escape the floods from their roof tops, and hospital workers risking their lives to keep patients alive without electricity and supplies. This August, you can sign-up to be part of the recovery effort.

New Orleans and Gulf Coast Studio – First Steps in Rebuilding a Neighborhood is multidisciplinary, vertical studio and practicum involving urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design, and the environment. The Fall 2006 course will be team-taught focusing on practical strategies and solutions for a neighborhood in New Orleans. Students will gain an understanding of the complex issues of recovery and rebuilding from a natural disaster, and skills in assessing and evaluating environmental, natural factors, land-use planning, housing, urban design, and socioeconomic needs of a neighborhood. This is the first in a 3 year progression of studios. The Fall 2006 studio focuses on understanding the natural systems of the Gulf Coast as well as the structural economic issues and how they impact, effect and guide neighborhood recovery in a devastated neighborhood.

This fall, the BAC’s New Orleans studio will be working with people in the Lower 9th Ward to re-build. Come learn about the regional picture, coastal wetlands, levees, the morphology of the Mississippi River delta, neutral grounds, hydrology and drainage, the rich local culture, and economics. We will be working with a neighborhood, addressing tangible local issues. Come make a difference; practitioners in particular are invited, (48 AIA CEU Hrs.)
