ASLA 2007 Annual Meeting Highlights Residential Design

Landscape architects specializing in residential design will find a lot to love at the 2007 ASLA Annual Meeting & EXPO, October 5–9 in San Francisco. Recognizing that more than 70 percent of ASLA firms offer residential design services, and numerous studies project tremendous growth in consumer demand, residential design will be a major highlight of field sessions, tours, education programs, and the annual awards programs.

Fascinating field sessions and tours
Part education session, part professional tour, 100 percent valuable. This year, an unprecedented number of field sessions and tours will highlight residential landscape architecture topics and provide a behind-the-scenes look at a number of extraordinary projects. Field session and tour space will be limited and some sessions have already sold out, so register now to reserve tickets.

Exceptional education programs
In addition to important universal topics such as sustainability, plants, and design technology, several of the 2007 education sessions will focus specifically on residential design and will feature some of the most celebrated landscape architects in practice today. For a complete list of educational sessions, view the Schedule at a Glance.

Amazing awards
The ASLA 2007 Awards program recognizes design excellence around the world, and will feature the popular Residential Design Award category again this year. Co-sponsored by Garden Design, the awards will be presented on Monday, October 8, during the ASLA awards ceremony. A special champagne reception sponsored by Landscape Forms will be held following the ceremony to honor all award recipients, their clients, and student advisors.

Don’t miss out
The Society called on leading experts and award winners in the field to create programming to meet the needs of residential practitioners, and more than 2,500 attendees have already registered. The most popular field sessions, tours, and hotels are filling up quickly. Click here to register today!

Look for more information and a list of specific residential sessions and facilitators in the next issue of LAND Online (July 24). Not currently a LAND Online subscriber? Visit www.asla.org/land and sign up at the bottom of the page.

See you in San Francisco!

25th Annual Waterfront International Conference Planned for November 1-3, 2007, Boston Massachusetts

The Waterfront Center's 25th annual international conference on waterfront planning, development and culture will be held in Boston, Massachusetts at the Seaport Hotel.

The conference offers nine panels of three presenters each giving registrants a choice of three sessions on Friday morning, Friday afternoon and again on Saturday morning. In addition keynote presentations will take place at the opening and closing of the conference. A conference highlight is the announcement on Friday afternoon, November 2, of the 2007 "Excellence on the Waterfront" award winners for built projects, comprehensive plans and grassroots citizen's efforts, selected by an interdisciplinary jury. This year's 21st five-person jury is headed by Chris Carlson, Senior Design Fellow, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A special pre-conference workshop and guided tours of the Boston waterfront -- including a chance to see first hand many of the award-winning projects found there --will be offered all day on Thursday, September 28 (additional registration required). Citizen Schools Design Competition Information
Citizen Schools is a national non-profit, after school program located here in Boston. The foundation of our program is citizen teacher volunteers, teaching what they know and love.

Our volunteers lead a ten week, hands-on apprenticeship to a group of ten to twelve middle school students. At the end of the season, the students create a product or a presentation to share and demonstrate what they have learned, something we call a WOW!

Most of our volunteers come to us with no prior experience teaching or working with youth. We provide training and support to help them have a successful apprenticeship. Semesters run from late September to the end of December and mid-February to May. While the opportunity is challenging, the experience is richly rewarding.

This fall we are seeking to recruit fifteen to twenty-five teams led by architects and designers, willing to devote one afternoon a week to work with our students. Working with Kairos Shen, the director of planning at the Boston Redevelopment Authority, we have created a competition that will focus on the architecture and public space of two T-stations currently slated for renovation: Jackson Square and Sullivan Square. The apprenticeship will allow all participants to creatively engage in a real world project relevant to their everyday lives and to present these ideas to a panel of high-profiled judges on December 12.

Also, on September 6 at 6:00 pm, Citizen Schools, the BAS, and CDRC-Boston will co-host an introductory session at the Citizen Schools headquarters for architects and designers who will participate or are interested in participating. Ted Landsmark of the Boston Architectural College as well as Kairos will speak and there will be an opportunity to discuss the specifics of the competition.

There is a great deal of information on our website you may want to look over, including:

SketchUp Modeling

Get SketchUp 3D models from a UMass M.L.A. who has 2 years of experience developing the landscape architecture SketchUp modeling protocols for a Connecticut firm. SketchUp models are exceedingly communicative! You can model an entire site or a single detail and then you can take pictures of your model from any angle or from within it, using a variety of display styles, from simple forms with photorealistic paint to artful “hand” rendering. The program can generate animations showing walk-throughs or flyovers which really tell exciting stories. These animations can be inserted into a PowerPoint presentation, making them easy to use.

You can have quickly made models for design studies, or more carefully detailed models for presentations and renderings. Work time for a model compares to making a few good hand renderings, but instead you get an infinite number of images from a single model! Models can be altered as design development proceeds. Work is done remotely in Western Massachusetts, with occasional visits to your office. All support graphics, such as AutoCAD and Photoshop are also available to make your model work hard for you.

Contact SketchUpConsulting@comcast.net. and start showing your ideas in all three dimensions.
