"Landscape
Architect" Amendment Passes
House Committee passes amendment to include "landscape architects".
At the request of ASLAs Federal Government Affairs staff, Congressman
Michael McCaul (R,TX) offered an amendment to include landscape
architects in H.R. 1716, the Green Energy Education Act.
H.R.
1716, would allow the Department of Energy and the National Science
Foundation to provide grants to colleges and universities to improve
engineering and architecture education related to the design and
construction of high performance buildings. The amendment calls
for improving the ability of engineers, architects, landscape
architects and planners to work together on designing high
performance buildings. The amendment passed the House Committee
on Science and Technologys by voice vote.
Passage
of the McCaul amendment is a great victory for ASLA. Passage of
this amendment demonstrates that our federal legislators recognize
the many contributions that landscape architects are making in the
design and construction of energy efficient buildings.
This
bill may soon move to the full House of Representatives for floor
action.

Summer Meeting & Trade Show
Tower

Boylston, MA
Join
Massachusetts' largest green industry associations - MFGA and MNLA
- for their fourth annual collaborative event, the 2007 Summer Meeting
and Trade Show on Wednesday, July 18, 2007.
The
educational program organized by UMass Extension will feature:
Dr.
Bonnie Appleton, Professor of Horticulture from Virginia Tech, discussing
research on Planting Bare Root Trees. She will discuss the production,
harvest, and planting of bare root trees in the landscape. An on-site
planting demonstration will be conducted. If the production, harvest,
and planting of trees for landscape use is looked at historically,
the horticulture industry didn't start with root balls packaged
in burlap, rope, and wire, or in containers of a variety of sizes,
shapes, and colors. It started with - to be precise - bare root
fruit trees. For a number of reasons (roots too deep in root balls,
root deformities, soil/substrate interfaces, root ball weight, etc.)
it may be time to return to the true "roots" of the industry,
namely bare root. This newer use of bare root planting doesn't involve
the traditional bare rooting of small dormant deciduous trees or
evergreen seedlings, but rather the bare rooting of sizable caliper
landscape trees, and not necessarily when dormant. A cooperative
effort between two consulting arborists and a university researcher
is currently under way to further explore and validate this concept.
The demonstration will feature a couple of root balls that will
be bare rooted and examined to show why this process can be so beneficial.

Urban
Water and Landscape Designer
The
Charles River Watershed Associations mission is to use science,
advocacy, planning, and the law to protect, preserve and enhance
the Charles River and its watershed.
Recently
CRWAs work in the area of environmental restoration has substantially
expanded and we anticipate that over the next few years, we will
be expanding our work to address the ways in which changes on the
land--particularly in urban areas--affect the Charles River and
its watershed.
Accordingly
we seek to hire a part-time employee with creativity and skills
in water-oriented urban landscape design, and graphics capabilities
starting Sept 1st 2007. CRWAs programs require a facility
for team work, self-motivation, and interest in implementing the
concepts of environmental restoration and green design. This position
will work directly with CRWAs Urban Restoration Specialist,

Job

or in serving as a consultant to landscape architects, architects,
and planners from outside firms and organizations. Be able to
"speak the language" of design and watershed restoration.
- Preparation
of graphics for handouts/brochures, newsletter articles and public
presentations. Much of our work in the planning and design area
relies upon creating inspiring graphics that depict "green"
and sustainable water treatment and management practices and which
can convey their visual impact to an audience of professionals
as well as laypersons.
- Research
on a variety of topics. Common topics include emerging best management
practices in stormwater design, LEED standards, Green Building
issues, stormwater and land use policy and regulation, wastewater
treatment practices and alternatives, and water conservation.
Internet research, as well as site visits, telephone interviews
and literature reviews will be necessary for certain projects.
- Writing
articles, press releases, fact sheets as part of CRWAs education,
outreach and advocacy programs.
- Flexibility
and willingness to work on "spontaneous" assignments
in order to facilitate organizational progress and function are
critical for all CRWA employees.

Skills: background in Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, or
Environmental Engineering emphasizing stormwater, with ability
to act as a project leader or member of a consultant team.
- Graphic
Skills: Adobe Suite (CS2) including Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator;
AutoCAD; knowledge of GIS (ArcMap) and Web design would also be
beneficial.

The
Coalition for a Better Acre Seeking Experienced Landscape Architect
The Coalition for a Better Acre, a non profit community development
corporation in Lowell, MA, is seeking an experienced landscape architect
to help us with the redesign of a playground and basketball court
on Moody Street in Lowells Acre neighborhood.
The
Coalition for a Better Acre (CBA) is a community organization that
is committed to ensuring that the voice of residents is organized,
heard, respected and decisive in shaping the future of the Acre
neighborhood and other areas of Lowell, MA. Thirty-eight percent
of the residents that we work in partnership with earn less than
$15,000 a year and over 50% are immigrants.
Local
residents, small business owners and church leaders formed CBA in
1982, in response to a city-sponsored plan to raze and rebuild the
Acres Triangle neighborhood. The plan would have displaced
low-income families and replaced affordable housing with market-rate
housing and commercial spaces. CBA successfully opposed the city-sponsored
plan and went on to launch many other successful organizing campaigns
and programs.
CBA
programs address the most pressing community needs and create avenues
to promote true grassroots community development such as this community
planning process to redevelop one of the most well used playgrounds
in the Acre Neighborhood.
For
this project, we are seeking professionals interested in working
as part of a community-driven grassroots initiative in a pro bono
capacity. CBA has partnered closely with the citys Division
of Planning and Development (DPD), the Concord, MA-based Jericho
Road Project, and local children and teens in order to create a
safe, clean, and family-friendly public space. The redevelopment
of the playground and basketball court have been in the works since
early 2005, when CBAs Upper Merrimack Street Planning process
identified the need for an improved recreational space to better
serve the needs of the neighborhoods youth. In late 2006,
a series of meetings were held with young Acre residents to gather
input and recommendations.
The
redesign will do the following:
- Expand
the existing half-court basketball court into a full court
- Reconfigure
the current playground area, setting it farther back from the
street
- Provide
new playground equipment
- Add
a sitting area for parents to supervise their children while they
play
If
interested, please contact Katherine Easterly, CBA Senior Project
Manager at 978-452-7523, extension 808.
