Hello
%%FIRST%%
A
wonderful time was had by 200 BSLA members, clients, and sponsors
at the annual BSLA Celebration Gala on May 3 at the Hotel
Marlowe. It was a great evening catching up with colleagues and
peers, recognizing significant contributions to the profession,
and celebrating the twenty award winning projects.
Highlights
included a delightfully humorous globe-spanning tour of gardens
through the eyes of Lifetime Achievement Honoree Joseph Hudak.
The BSLA also marked the official end of Joseph Geller's service
as BSLA President with a donation in his name to The Emerald
Necklace Conservancy - this year's Award of Excellence honored organization.
The evening ended with a special award to Sergeant Lucas Murray
of the Boston Parks & Recreation Department. Luke shared the
moving video he made chronicling his successful coordination effort
to get a Kompan playground built in Iraq during his deployment as
an Infantry Team Leader in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Many
thanks for the support from our sponsors: Anderson Landscape Construction,
Inc., Boston Illumination Group, Inc., Brilliant Lighting, Inc.,
Conceptual Site Furnishings, Inc., Landscape Forms, Nite Image,
Omni-Lite, Inc., Old Town Fiberglass, Inc as represented by Lantz

centerpieces, as well as the BSLA membership for making this such
a terrific event!

Final Walden Passage Public Workshop
2:00
- 5:00 pm
Concord's Peabody Middle School Cafeteria
1231 Old Marlboro Road
Concord, MA
The
public is invited to participate in a Saturday afternoon workshop
on June 2, 2007 to review and comment on the Walden Passage Feasibility
Study which is analyzing the feasibility of a combined wildlife-recreational
crossing of Route 2 between Crosby's Corner and the Sudbury River,
in the vicinity of Walden Pond, in Concord and Lincoln. The workshop
will take place from 2:00 - 5:00 pm at Concord's Peabody Middle
School Cafeteria, 1231 Old Marlboro Road, Concord. This workshop
is the third and final workshop to encourage public comment and
review of the Walden Passage project, and in this workshop, the
preferred location for the wildlife passage will be discussed.
The
Walden Passage feasibility study was initially proposed by the Walden
Woods Project in 2004 and is currently being managed by the Metropolitan
Area Planning Council (MAPC), the Regional Planning Council for
the Boston Metropolitan region. The study is funded by the Federal
Highway Administration's Transportation Community and System Preservation
Program (TCSP). The MAPC has contracted with an interdisciplinary
team from UMass Amherst to examine the feasibility of establishing
a combined wildlife and recreational overpass. The project team
includes experts in: wildlife biology, conservation planning, landscape
architecture, landscape history, and engineering.
The
first public meeting was held on October 21, 2006 at the Concord
Carlisle High School in Concord, MA. Members of the Concord and
Lincoln communities were present. The UMass team introduced the
project and discussed the significance of connectivity for wildlife
as well as cultural and engineering considerations that will be
addressed in the feasibility study. Meeting attendees raised questions
concerning: feasibility of combined human/wildlife crossing; cost/funding
resources; documenting current human and wildlife movement; addressing
community needs and concerns; local and regional context; increased
visitation issues; and, structural concerns.
The
second public meeting was held on January 27, 2007 at Lincoln Town
Hall. At this meeting, the UMass team presented three alternative
locations for the combined wildlife-recreational passage. Attendees
discussed the strengths and weaknesses of each alternative and priorities
for the project.
The
UMass team will conduct the final public meeting on Saturday, June
2, 2007, 2:00 - 5:00 pm. A project web site includes additional
information about the project and the alternative locations for
the proposed passage at: www.umass.edu/waldenpassage.
The final report for the project will be completed in August 2007
and will be available for public review through the Conservation
Departments of Lincoln and Concord.

Join
Massachusetts' largest green industry associations - MFGA and MNLA
- for their fourth annual collaborative event, the 2007 Summer Meeting
and Trade Show on Wednesday, July 18, 2007.
The
educational program organized by UMass Extension will feature:
Dr.
Bonnie Appleton, Professor of Horticulture from Virginia Tech, discussing
research on Planting Bare Root Trees. She will discuss the production,
harvest, and planting of bare root trees in the landscape. An on-site
planting demonstration will be conducted. If the production, harvest,
and planting of trees for landscape use is looked at historically,
the horticulture industry didn't start with root balls packaged
in burlap, rope, and wire, or in containers of a variety of sizes,
shapes, and colors. It started with - to be precise - bare root
fruit trees. For a number of reasons (roots too deep in root balls,
root deformities, soil/substrate interfaces, root ball weight, etc.)
it may be time to return to the true "roots" of the industry,
namely bare root. This newer use of bare root planting doesn't involve
the traditional bare rooting of small dormant deciduous trees or
evergreen seedlings, but rather the bare rooting of sizeable caliper
landscape trees, and not necessarily when dormant. A cooperative
effort between two consulting arborists and a university researcher
is currently under way to further explore and validate this concept.
The demonstration will feature a couple of root balls that will
be bare rooted and examined to show why this process can be so beneficial.

SketchUp
Modeling
Get SketchUp 3D models from a UMass M.L.A. who has 2 years of experience
developing the landscape architecture SketchUp modeling protocols
for a Connecticut firm. SketchUp models are exceedingly communicative!
You can model an entire site or a single detail and then you can
take pictures of your model from any angle or from within it, using
a variety of display styles, from simple forms with photorealistic
paint to artful hand rendering. The program can generate
animations showing walk-throughs or flyovers which really tell exciting
stories. These animations can be inserted into a PowerPoint presentation,
making them easy to use.
You can have quickly made models for design studies, or more carefully
detailed models for presentations and renderings. Work time for
a model compares to making a few good hand renderings, but instead
you get an infinite number of images from a single model! Models
can be altered as design development proceeds. Work is done remotely
in Western Massachusetts, with occasional visits to your office.
All support graphics, such as AutoCAD and Photoshop are also available
to make your model work hard for you.
Contact SketchUpConsulting@comcast.net.
and start showing your ideas in all three dimensions.
